A New Surgical Pen Can Detect Cancer in 10 Seconds

Faster detection

A group of scientists and engineers from The University of Texas have invented a device that can detect cancer cells in just 10 seconds, which is 150 times faster than conventional methods. The handheld pen-like probe, which is called MasSpec, uses molecular fingerprints to distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous cells during surgery. The researchers described their invention in a new paper published on Science Translational Medicine.
