Presenting the Most Detailed Map of the Universe to Date

Credit: Nature

A team of scientists gathered data on over 10,000 galaxies that surround us. They mapped each galaxy’s position and movement in space and for the first time they showed that the Milky Way is part of a much larger structure, a super-cluster that they have named Laniakea.

They’ve also discovered that the Milky Way is nested in the furthest reaches of the cluster. You can read the research paper here. Watch the video below for more details.

It’s an amazing feat, to map a mega-super-structure which is reportedly 500 million light years across. So immense we can’t begin to wrap our heads around even a fraction of its size. And to think the Lanaiakea is only one small part of a much bigger universe.
